Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival and first walk through Vecrīga
Rano Departure to Riga

Start the day with a flight to RIX — a direct connection from your home airport works best. A morning or early-afternoon flight leaves the full block for Vecrīga and the first dinner in town.

Połud Arrival and transfer to the centre

After landing pick bus 22 or Bolt — both reach the centre in 20–30 min. The bus is cheaper (€2), Bolt faster with luggage (€10–14).

15:00 Check-in at your stay

Drop the luggage and head out on foot. A stay in Vecrīga or Centrs keeps the whole plan within walking distance — no evening transfers.

15:30 House of the Blackheads

Rātslaukums 7 — the merchants' guild house from 1334, fully rebuilt in the 1990s. The interior halls land hard as a first impression. Ticket ~€9; visit on Day 1 before the in-season queues start.

+1 option
16:20 Riga Cathedral and Dome Square

The 13th-century gothic cathedral on Herdera laukums 6 — and one of Europe's largest historic pipe organs. Entry €5; calm pace, a good breather before the evening block.

+1 option
17:10 Three Brothers on Mazā Pils

Riga's oldest houses (15th–17th c.) lined up at Mazā Pils 17–21. Stop here before dinner — the late-afternoon light sculpts the facades and the shot is crowd-free.

+1 option
18:30 Latvian-style dinner

Pick a Vecrīga restaurant with a Latvian menu and local craft beer — the best addresses run live music after 19:00, mains €12–18. On weekends, reserve 1–2 days ahead.

+1 option
20:00 Evening walk along the Daugava

A short walk on Akmens tilts closes Day 1. The best frames come right after sunset, when the lit-up Old Town facades reflect on the water. Evening Daugava wind is strong — bring a layer.

21:00 Stay in the centre

Walk back without overthinking. Sleeping close to the Old Town speeds the start of Day 2.

Day 2 — Art Nouveau, markets and Corner House
08:00 Same stay — day start

You sleep in the same place as the first night. A quick start at 8:00 buys a full day without rushing.

08:15 Breakfast near your stay

Eat at the hotel restaurant or a nearby café with good coffee and a simple breakfast menu. Don't spend time on transit for food — you head straight to Central Market from here.

09:00 Riga Central Market

Halls built inside former zeppelin hangars at Nēģu iela 7 — cheese, smoked fish, bread, and a quick read of the city's food identity. Be there before 10:00, when stalls are fully stocked and tourists still sleep.

10:00 Academy of Sciences viewing terrace

The 17th floor of the Academy of Sciences (Akadēmijas laukums 1) — one of the city's best panoramas with an open terrace. Entry €6. Only worth it in clear weather — if it's raining or foggy, use the National Library alternative.

+1 option
11:00 Crossing to Pārdaugava

Bolt (€5–7) or bus 13 from the stop near Central Market — a fast 10–15 min ride. Walking across Akmens bridge would cost ~30 min you'll need at Kalnciema Quarter.

11:30 Kalnciema Quarter

Wooden architecture and small galleries at Kalnciema iela 35 — the sharpest contrast to the stone Old Town. The Saturday market (crafts, cheese, local wine) runs only in season (May–October). Off-season or other days, check kvartals.lv before going.

+1 option
12:45 Back to the centre

Bolt to Centrs (€5–7, ~10 min). Skip the bridge walk and save energy for six hours of Art Nouveau, the museum and Corner House.

13:15 Walk down Alberta iela

Europe's densest Art Nouveau ensemble. Look up and pause at numbers 2, 4, 8, 12 and 13 — the best cross-section of Mikhail Eisenstein's style. The facades sing in midday light. If it rains, swap the walk for the Latvian National Museum of Art interior (alternative).

+1 option
14:00 Art Nouveau Museum

Alberta iela 12 — an early-20th-century apartment preserved exactly as it stood: wallpaper, tiles, lamps. Ticket €9; the visit takes 50–70 min. Small and popular — enter before 15:00 to avoid the crowd.

15:15 Lunch at a Latvian cafeteria

Eat at a Latvian-style cafeteria chain — no reservations, plate from the line in 5 minutes. Mains €6–9. A solid energy reset before Corner House.

+1 option
16:15 Stūra māja — Corner House

Brīvības iela 61 — the former KGB headquarters. The hardest 20th-century lesson on this trip: free entry to the standing exhibition, €15 for the guided cell tour (book online in advance). Leave at least 75 minutes. Don't schedule the next stop on a tight margin.

18:00 Freedom Monument and Bastejkalns Park

Step out of Corner House and return to the green spine of the centre on Brīvības bulvāris. Honour-guard changeover at the Freedom Monument runs on the hour (ceremonial standing 15:00–18:00). A short breather after the heavy exhibition.

19:30 Premium Latvian dinner

Pick a modern Latvian restaurant with a tasting menu (€55–95/person) and local wines. A calm evening without compromises. Reservation mandatory, especially on weekends.

+1 option
21:00 Second night in the centre

Same stay as before — Day 3 stays light and calm before the return.

Day 3 — Occupation Museum, skyline and departure
08:00 Check-out and luggage at reception

Pack in the morning and leave the suitcases at reception. The last walk and lunch happen without weight on your back.

08:30 Quick breakfast in the centre

Eat at a proven cafeteria or café — fast, no queue, porridge or eggs with coffee for €5–7. A solid start before the day's history block.

09:30 Museum of the Occupation of Latvia

Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1 — a hard but essential stop. The exhibition walks you through Soviet, Nazi and second Soviet occupation (1940–1991). Free entry (suggested donation €5). Leave at least 90 minutes.

+1 option
11:00 Town Hall Square and Roland statue

A short walk on Town Hall Square — the rebuilt town hall, the Roland statue, and the view back on the House of the Blackheads from Day 1. A light breather between the museum and the tower; the morning light works well here.

+1 option
11:30 St Peter's Church tower

Reformācijas laukums 1 — the 72-metre tower closes the trip with the best Old Town and Daugava panorama. Ticket €9; open 10:00–18:00 (longer in summer). The platform sometimes closes in strong wind — check at the desk before going up.

+1 option
13:00 Farewell Latvian lunch

Pick a place serving pelēkie zirņi (grey peas with bacon), cranberry compote and Latvian home cooking. Mains €9–14. A solid last full meal before the transfer.

+1 option
14:30 Coffee and Black Balsam tasting

Stop at a Vecrīga café for Latvian sweets and a Riga Black Balsam tasting (small pour €4–6, cocktail €8–10). The flavour is herbal and strong — a good closer for the trip.

+1 option
16:00 Airport transfer and return

Leave the centre for RIX with a 2.5-hour buffer before takeoff. Bus 22 or Bolt close the trip without rushing — your luggage is already packed from the morning.

Planning and reservations

- Stūra māja (Corner House): book the KGB cells tour online in advance — in season you may not get in, or wait an hour, without a ticket. - Premium dinner: reserve 2–3 days ahead (earlier for Friday/Saturday), especially for tasting menus. - Dinner with live music: reserve for Friday and Saturday evenings, on weekdays just arrive after 19:00. - Art Nouveau Museum (Alberta iela 12): small and popular — enter before 15:00 or buy a ticket online. - Kalnciema Quarter: the Saturday market runs seasonally only (May–October); off-season check kvartals.lv first, some galleries open only on weekends.

Transport in Riga

- Bus 22 from RIX airport to the centre: €2 to the driver, ~30 min, runs every 10–15 min from ~05:00 to ~23:30. - Bolt: fast, cheap by European standards (€10–14 RIX to centre), pays in PLN in-app. With luggage or after 23:00, the obvious choice. - Vecrīga and Centrs: most of the route (Old Town, Alberta iela, Bastejkalns, Stūra māja) walks in 10–15 min. Use Bolt for Pārdaugava, the airport and Mežaparks. - The Rīgas Satiksme E-talons card pays off only from 4 rides per day — not worth it for 2 days. - Free Wi-Fi on city buses.

Money and cards

- Latvia uses the euro — Revolut/Wise/N26 cards work fee-free; €30–50 cash is enough for incidentals. - ATMs: SEB, Swedbank and Citadele won't charge EU cards. - Contactless is accepted everywhere — restaurants, cafés, Bolt, buses, shops. The only "cash only" spots tend to be small kiosks and the Kalnciema craft market. - Tipping: 5–10% in restaurants (not added to the bill); not expected in cafés or Bolt.

Weather, clothing and health

- May to September is the sweet spot: 15–24°C, long days. In March, April and October pack a rain shell and a warm layer. - Daugava-side wind is real all year — bring a thin beanie or buff for the evening walk. - Shoes: comfortable and cobble-friendly. Vecrīga is cobblestone for ~90% of the route. - Pharmacies: Mēness and Apotheka have central branches, open daily until 22:00; EU prescriptions work. - The EHIC card covers public healthcare, but private travel insurance is still worth it (repatriation, liability).

Language and customs

- Latvian is the official language, but in Riga hotel staff, waiters and Bolt drivers speak English without trouble. - A few Latvian words open conversations: "sveiki" (hi), "paldies" (thanks), "lūdzu" (please), "atvainojiet" (excuse me). - Riga is a calm city. After dark Vecrīga is well lit; watch your footing on uneven cobbles more than your safety. - In memory museums (Stūra māja, Occupation Museum) keep quiet and be restrained with photos. - Latvia is LV, not LT (Lithuania) — the mix-up happens with flights and bookings, double-check the country code.

We built this itinerary to be realistically walkable within 3 days: instead of cramming everything Latvia has to offer, we pick the strongest highlights and leave breathing room between them. That keeps the route content-rich but not exhausting — especially helpful if you travel with kids, with older companions, or simply want to make every evening's dinner in peace.

Once you clone this template, you can rearrange any day, invite friends to co-edit, add your own places and track a shared budget for the whole trip. You'll find the full list of ready-made routes in our trip plans catalog, and stories from real trips on the blog.

How to prepare for this trip (Latvia)

The hardest part of trips to Latvia is usually not picking attractions — it's the logistics: booking accommodation in the right neighbourhood, airport transport, the order in which you visit places, and money. The "3 dni w Rydze — Secesja, Stare Miasto i Jūrmała" plan solves that for you — it gives you a ready scaffold onto which you glue your own dates and preferences.

Before you go, it's worth running three quick checks inside the app: review the packing list (Kompas Podróży suggests gaps based on the weather of your chosen months), set up a shared trip budget (every participant sees their own balance), and pre-download the plan for offline use. Once you arrive, you simply open each day of the plan — the attractions, restaurants and transport tips are already in place.

When you get back, the plan stays with you as a travel journal where you can add photos and notes. That's handy if you plan to return to the area or want to recommend the route to friends — just share the link and they'll clone your template the same way you'll clone ours today.
